Lannan grew up on a farm in Loogootee, Ind., and he said he looks forward to working in the garden and greenhouse with his science classes. McGary officials also envision using the greenhouse and garden for lessons in other subject areas.

McGary, along with Delaware and Howard Roosa (soon to be Evans) elementary schools, are the three "equity schools" in the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corp. The school district and the Evansville Teachers Association developed the equity schools concept last year to provide the three schools more self governance over issues such as the school calendar and curriculum.
