Veteran playwright Israel Horovitz's latest opus, "Gloucester Blue," is a play with a long, slow fuse. Much of the first act is time biding, albeit with entertaining tangential riffs on topics ranging from National Public Radio to the rock band Aerosmith. But when matters reach their eventual combustion point, the results are amusingly murderous and deliciously lurid.
"Gloucester Blue" is hardly the most profound play you will ever encounter. But there is plenty of craft in the script and production, and lots to enjoy as long as your taste runs to dark toned comedy.

The story concerns a couple of local handymen, the entrepreneurial Stumpy (David Sirois) and his dubious recent hire, Latham (Steve Anthony), who we learn is newly released from prison. Together, they prime the interior walls of a former fish processing plant being turned into a summer getaway for a well off yuppie couple, Lexi (Andrea Conte) and her hubby, Bummy (Michael St. Pierre).
Providence seems to be on Latham's side, though, for Bummy arrives on the scene, fuming over his wife's infidelity. Thinking quickly, Latham offers to kill Stumpy for a mere $25,000, heading offstage and making enough violent noise to convince Bummy he is getting his money's worth. After intermission, the walls have become a crisp Gloucester Blue and there is plenty more havoc to be wreaked upon and by the surviving threesome.

Horovitz's son Adam of the rock band Beastie Boys contributes an intermittent soundtrack of foreboding music pulses, but they are more self conscious than advisable. Stephen Placido's set is a step up for Arts Garage, even if you do find yourself wondering how they're going to clean off and repaint those walls night after night.
