Ryan is proposing to add technology, engineering and art to its math and science program next year, pointing to a lack of a clear vision and teacher buy in as the reason its initial plans didn't work as well as was hoped.
Lafayette Elementary became a focus school for gifted students. Ryan Elementary added a math and science focus. Sanchez Elementary worked to become an International Baccalaureate, or IB, school. Pioneer Elementary, which doesn't have a neighborhood attendance area and already was a magnet school, continued its dual immersion bilingual program.
She said adding engineering would also help prepare students if they decide to take the engineering classes offered at Lafayette's Angevine Middle School and Centaurus High School. While this kind of focus is more common in secondary schools, she said, it's important to expose students to the possibilities early.

"There is a lot of excitement," Bassoff said.
The only school planning a major program change is Ryan Elementary.

"Research shows most students decide to pursue those careers by third or fourth grade," she said. "Underrepresented students need to see themselves in those roles early."
In Lafayette specifically, the district added programs requested by parents in a bid to entice more of the town's families to enroll their children. Along with boosting enrollment, the goal was to reduce segregation by income and ethnicity and increase achievement.
